Calculator FAQs

Information about our Carbon Calculators and how we calculate your Carbon Footprint.

We offer you many ways to calculate and reduce your contribution to global warming. Use our comprehensive carbon calculator to measure and offset your carbon footprint, or select an offset package that meets your needs. At Standard Carbon we believe that the earth is worth a little extra effort; that's why our subscription packages have built in "fudge factors" to cover your footprint completely.

Calculating Airline Flight Carbon Footprints

If you are like most business travelers, you spend more time in the air than a sane person should. You need a way to calculate your carbon footprint that is always simple and reliable. Here is how we do it at Standard Carbon:

  • We offset all air travel 1 lb CO 2 per mile.
  • We calculate mileage from the starting point to the final destination and exclude connections.
  • We overestimate when we help the environment

All that you need to know is how many miles you want to offset! If you can't remember, just look up last year's frequent flyer statement.

Reasoning: Some online calculators that claim they can tell you accurately how much CO2 you are responsible for on a flight are just plane dumb. There is no consideration of variables such as what type of aircraft, the number of passengers onboard, cruising altitude, holding patterns, freight cargo, jet stream etc. Because some of the variables from flying are impossible to determine we make it simple and offset generously.

The World Resource Institute estimates a carbon footprint from flying to be .52 lbs/mile, .41 lbs/miles and .39lbs/miles from short, medium and long haul flights. We have almost doubled this factor to insure that your flights are offset to the highest standard in the world.

Calculating Car & Automobile Carbon Footprints

When you purchase a 6 or 12 month subscription to Standard Carbon we will eliminate your vehicles contribution to global warming by eliminating pollution credits traded on the Chicago Climate Exchange. Our subscription packages will offset all the greenhouse gasses from a car getting 20 miles per gallon or better. If your car is an SUV (16mpg or better), or you would like to offset more, select the SUV option:

  • Assume the national driving average of 12,000 miles per year.
  • Offset all car travel 1 lb for every mile (20 MPG or better).
  • If your vehicle is a truck or SUV, offset 2,000 lbs more.

Reasoning: To drive green and eliminate your vehicles's carbon footprint, the most actual calculation requires the number of gallons of gas you purchas each year. Few people remember this number, but if you do, then you can purchase carbon offsets by the ton and neutralize your contribution to global warming exactly. Our calculator is very accurate for the average driver, but if you have a Yaris or Toyota Prius, you are going to help the environment more than the average offseter! Pat yourself on the back.

Calculating Boat & Boating Carbon Footprints

Eliminate the greenhouse gas from your inboard or outboard engines.

  • Enter your engine's horse power and the amount of time that you operate them each year.
  • If you know the amount of fuel that your boat used last year, then purchase carbon offsets by the ton with our fuel and energy calculator.

Reasoning: Because boats do not have odometers, the most accurate way to calculate the carbon footprint of a boat is to use the amount of time the engine has run and the maximum output of the engine in horse power. Our boat travel calculator measure the carbon footprint at maximum horsepower so there is no doubt that your entire greenhouse gas footprint will be offset. The formula is 1.9lbs co2 per horsepower/hour.

Calculating Events, Birthdays, Wedding and other Parties Carbon Footprints

Your guests will be impressed with your green savvy when you make your next conference or birthday party carbon neutral. This is a great way to protect the environment and raise awareness about global warming. Here is how we calculate the Carbon footprint:

  • Offset the electricity and activities with one ton- straight up.
  • Offset Carbon Dioxide from local attendees for 50 miles of travel
  • Offset out of town attendees for 1000 miles of travel

Assumptions: Travel is the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions for most events. We have the highest standards in the industry and offset 1lb of carbon dioxide for every mile of travel. The average American drives 32 miles per day, so we round up to 50 and make sure that the global warming impact of every driver is balanced. If you have out of town guests that will be flying to your conference, we offset 1,000 miles of travel for each one.

Calculating Local, State and Federal Carbopn Footprints.

You have a campaign to win, so make your message about global warming clear and balance the emission from your race! Standard Carbon offsets have already passed the highest scientific and political scrutiny. Carbon neutral is a high standard for politics, here is how we calculate the footprint from your campaign:

  • Offset each direct mail piece with 1lb of carbon dioxide
  • Offset all campaign travel with 1lb of carbon dioxide for every mile
  • Eliminate office emissions from staff and volunteer activities by one ton per month (local races).

Reasoning: The carbon footprint of postage is less than 1lb carbon dioxide for 12 oz of printed material-we make sure that all of your voter contact is balanced with more than enough CO2 reductions. Travel and office emissions are calculated using the same high standards as our travel and home subscriptions.
