Offset FAQs

What is an offset?

Let's face it, we need cars and they pollute. An offset is a way of balancing pollution by supporting an equal amount of environmental cleanup elsewhere. Carbon offsetting is a new solution to many people, but the concept has been around for almost two decades. Learn more on our blog.

Where does my money go?

Your money is used to purchase and cancel pollution rights that are used by industrial polluters to legally emit greenhouse gasses. When we cancel the carbon credit, we cancel the legal rights of a polluter to emit greenhouse gas pollution. The National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) makes sure that the corporations don't cheat this arrangement.

What is the difference between a carbon offset and a renewable energy credit?

Carbon offsets reduce global warming by legally canceling greenhouse gas emission rights. Do not confuse carbon offsets credits with renewable energy credits (RECs) which do not represent any legal requirement to reduce greenhouse gas. Even some the most reputable looking dealers selling renewable energy credits cannot verify that they have reduced greenhouse gas. Learn more on our blog.

How do I know that what I purchase is real?

Every carbon offset has an individual serial number that is registered on the Chicago Climate Exchange. When you offset your greenhouse gas emissions, that serial number is canceled and disappears from the marketplace.

 Is Standard Carbon audited?

The carbon offsets that we retire have been registered and verified by the Chicago Climate Exchange and are audited by the National Association of Securities Dealers. These are the same credits that are used by the US Congress and large corporations such Bank of America to offset their emissions. We plan to have our company's internal accounting and offset transaction externally audited in 2007.

What is the Chicago Climate Exchange?

Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) is “the world's first and North America's only legally binding rules-based greenhouse gas emissions allowance trading system, as well as the world's only global system for emissions trading based on all six greenhouse gases.”

How do your carbon calculators work?

Most of our carbon calculators use data from the World Resource Institute to measure your carbon footprint. Our offset subscription packages however go further and offset more than the average carbon footprint. Learn more about our carbon calculators by clicking here.

Why does Standard Carbon not use the Green-E label?

Green-E certification only applies to renewable energy credits (RECs), and because these do not meet our quality standard, we do not sell them. All Standard Carbon offsets have been verified by the National Association of Securities Dealers and we think that this is better. To learn more about our high standard for offsetting, check out our blog.
