Campaigns offered a chance to put their money where their mouth is, take leadership, and fight global warming through carbon offsets
Seattle—January 11, 2008— Standard Carbon LLC has launched a program for federal election campaigns to track and eliminate their contribution to climate change by purchasing carbon offsets through the Chicago Climate Exchange. To be certified Carbon Neutral, each candidate must sign a pledge and report its carbon footprint estimate to Standard Carbon for offsetting. The program extends access to the same carbon offsets purchased by the “Green the Capitol” initiative to make official US House business carbon neutral.
Carbon Neutrality is essential to any candidate that takes a stand on climate change in the November election. “If you commit to stand up for what you believe in that means taking personal action first. Climate change depends upon leadership, because cleaning up the air is a non-partisan decision. Carbon offsetting is an effective way for politicians to reduce their carbon footprint—the amount of green house gas released into the atmosphere each year—beyond what is practical through energy conservation and low emissions travel. The money is spent to fund environmental projects in the United States that reduce carbon dioxide pollution such as renewable energy, clean agriculture, and industrial efficiency.
The US Congress has been made carbon neutral through Speaker Pelosi’s Green the Capitol Initiative. However, this effort administered through the Chief Administrative Officer does not extend to individual election campaigns. To be certified carbon neutral, each campaign must measure its output of carbon and purchase offsets to balance it.
